Morty Smith of the Prime Universe is a Fighter from the Rick and Morty Universe in MultiVersus. He was revealed on July 22nd, 2022 at San Diego Comic Con and was released on August 23rd, 2022 (originally slated to release alongside Season 1 (Open Beta) on August 9th, 2022), during the Open Beta period.[1][2]

Origin

Morty Smith is one of the two titular central protagonists of the 2013 Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty, created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. Morty, alongside Rick, first appeared in the short film The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, a parody of Universal's Back to the Future film series. When the two pitched the idea to Adult Swim, the channel greenlit the project as Rick and Morty, with the first episode airing on December 2, 2013. Morty, like Rick, was voiced by Roiland until 2022 following allegations of domestic violence and abuse, with Multiversus being one of Roiland's last roles as the character, albeit through archived dialogue.

Morty is the son of Beth and Jerry Smith, the younger brother of Summer Smith, and the grandson of Rick Sanchez. When the series first began, Morty was fretful, kind-hearted, incredibly anxious, and somewhat submissive, but, as the series progressed, Morty became more serious, cold-hearted, confident, and independent from Rick.

Official Biography

Aw geez, it’s a fighting game.

Website

Lots of people have close relationships with their grandparents. And then there’s… whatever Morty has with his grandpa, Rick. While under Rick’s “supervision” Morty has been dragged all over the universe. Whether it’s through countless different time streams, or in and out of various dimensions (mostly legally), he does his best to remain optimistic despite the crushing truths of reality.[3]

In-Game

He's a Morty. All bark, no bite. What more could you want?

New Year Patch

Developer’s Note: Currently, Morty’s Temporal Back-Up’s Save Point is saving his allies and influencing the outcome of matches a bit too much. We wanted to prevent situations where Morty could use Save Point to save an ally, be rungout, and then immediately Save Point again upon respawning. As is, we felt this was too much to play against and created circumstances that were too safe for Morty and his ally while not appropriately rewarding his opponents for making meaningful plays against the duo. In exchange, we have given Morty some new combo possibilities from Air Down Attack and Side Air Attack. We hope that these changes will balance out Morty’s risk-benefit ratio.

  • + Ground Down Attack
    • Increased the hitbox size on Plumbus Time! by 10%

We're looking at pushing Morty more towards a Bruiser, but the changes could not get in for this patch. The goal is to have Morty have more of a combo-game, while reducing a bit of his projectile utility.

Trivia

  • Morty, Harley Quinn, and Rick are, currently, the only Fighters in the game who can swear if the player has toggled the "Mature Language" option on in the Settings menu.
    • Batman and The Man in Black also say the "badass" and "ass" swears respectively, but the game doesn't count them as being mature language.
  • In the Open Beta, Morty and Evil Morty, as well as Rick, were originally voiced by Justin Roiland (via his archived recordings from the first five seasons of Rick and Morty), before being replaced by Harry Belden following a controversy.
  • Morty was originally placed in the Bruiser class, but was moved to the Mage class in the 1.2.2 Mid Season Patch.
    • Despite the change, he is currently still listed as a Bruiser on the official website.
