Morty Smith of the Prime Universe is a Fighter from the Rick and MortyUniverse in MultiVersus. He was revealed on July 22nd, 2022 at San Diego Comic Con and was released on August 23rd, 2022 (originally slated to release alongside Season 1 (Open Beta) on August 9th, 2022), during the Open Beta period.[1][2]
Morty Smith is one of the two titular central protagonists of the 2013 Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty, created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. Morty, alongside Rick, first appeared in the short film The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, a parody of Universal's Back to the Future film series. When the two pitched the idea to Adult Swim, the channel greenlit the project as Rick and Morty, with the first episode airing on December 2, 2013. Morty, like Rick, was voiced by Roiland until 2022 following allegations of domestic violence and abuse, with Multiversus being one of Roiland's last roles as the character, albeit through archived dialogue.
Morty is the son of Beth and Jerry Smith, the younger brother of Summer Smith, and the grandson of Rick Sanchez. When the series first began, Morty was fretful, kind-hearted, incredibly anxious, and somewhat submissive, but, as the series progressed, Morty became more serious, cold-hearted, confident, and independent from Rick.
Official Biography
Aw geez, it’s a fighting game.
Website
Lots of people have close relationships with their grandparents. And then there’s… whatever Morty has with his grandpa, Rick. While under Rick’s “supervision” Morty has been dragged all over the universe. Whether it’s through countless different time streams, or in and out of various dimensions (mostly legally), he does his best to remain optimistic despite the crushing truths of reality.[3]
In-Game
He's a Morty. All bark, no bite. What more could you want?

ARMOTHY LAUNCH Morty launch himself feet first.
NEUTRAL J
AW GEEZ, SNAKES! Morty fires a laser PROJECTILE. If any active GRENADES are out, the laser will target each GRENADE, detonating them on collision. Without an active GRENADE, the laser will split into two snakePROJECTILES that launch in opposite directions vertically. COOLDOWN applies to the snakes.
AW GEEZ, AIR SNAKES! Same as ground.
SIDE 🡆 + J
UNRESOLVED ANGER ISSUES Morty pummels enemies with a COMBO of punches from Armothy, finishing by swinging a Hammer Morty. Morty can COMBO into a laser whip instead by pressing neutral input after the second hit of the COMBO.
BARBARIAN INSTINCTS Morty delivers a COMBO of 2 axe swings, both of which can be CHARGED.
UP 🡅 + J
AW GEEZ, MORE SNAKES! Similar to Neutral Normal, except Morty fires the laser upward and the snakes split horizontally.
POWER OF FIRE! Morty uses the power of an elemental ring to hit enemies upward and IGNITE them.
DOWN 🡇 + J
PLUMBUS TIME! Morty begins running his plumbus over the ground, hitting enemies and moving freely. Hold input to keep the plumbus out. The plumbus will CLEANSE allies and apply WEAKENED to enemies.
ARMOTHY ASSAULT Morty pounds downward with Armothy.

NEUTRAL K
IT'S A GRENADE, I THINK Morty throws a GRENADE PROJECTILE. Can throw multiple until out of AMMO.
YEP, THAT'S A GRENADE Same as ground.
SIDE 🡆 + K
POWER OF EARTH! Morty summons an earth pillar from the ground in front of him. Morty can CHARGE to increase how far in front of him the pillar appears. Striking a GRENADE with a pillar will split it into two separate GRENADES.
ANOTHER PORTAL? Morty receives ARMOR and peeks into a portal before hopping in. Hold input to aim where Morty will appear after hopping through the portal. The portal Morty exits from will remain, increasing the speed of allied PROJECTILES that pass by it. COOLDOWN applies, but only to the persistent exit portal.
UP 🡅 + K
UH, AUTO-PILOT? Morty calls in the spaceship as a PLATFORM that moves upward. COOLDOWN applies.
UH, AUTO-PILOT? Same as ground.
DOWN 🡇 + K
TEMPORAL BACK-UP Morty creates a save point at his position. After some time, Morty will warp back to the save point and HEAL himself and his allies slightly. Press input again to immediately warp back and leave a GRENADE at Morty's position before the warp. If Morty's ally is about to be RUNG OUT while the save point is active, they will instead warp back to Morty. COOLDOWN applies.
TEMPORAL BACK-UP Same as ground. Morty can create a save point in the air without using up his air special moves.
PASSIVE ABILITIESSCI-FI EXPLOSIVE TECHNOLOGY Many of Morty's attacks utilize GRENADES. GRENADES will detonate shortly after being thrown. If Morty overlaps with an ally, he will give them an idle GRENADE. Allies with idle GRENADES receive GRAY HEALTH and will throw the GRENADE in the direction of their next attack. COOLDOWN applies to giving allies GRENADES.
Developer’s Note: Currently, Morty’s Temporal Back-Up’s Save Point is saving his allies and influencing the outcome of matches a bit too much. We wanted to prevent situations where Morty could use Save Point to save an ally, be rungout, and then immediately Save Point again upon respawning. As is, we felt this was too much to play against and created circumstances that were too safe for Morty and his ally while not appropriately rewarding his opponents for making meaningful plays against the duo. In exchange, we have given Morty some new combo possibilities from Air Down Attack and Side Air Attack. We hope that these changes will balance out Morty’s risk-benefit ratio.
+ Air/Ground Neutral Special
Morty’s grenades can no longer be detonated by light projectiles
- Air/Ground Neutral Special
Reduced Morty’s grenade ammo to 2, down from 3
- Air / Ground Down Special
Removed healing on Temporal Back-Up’s Recall.
Tempora Back-Up’s cooldown no longer refreshes on respawn
+ Air Down Attack
Armothy Assault can now cancel much earlier, on hit.
- Air Down Attack
Added 1 frame of Whiff Lag and 1 frame of end lag to Armothy Assault
Increased spike’s downward angle
- Ground Side Attack
Jab 3 of Morty’s Hammer Morty’s hitbox size reduced by 20%
We're looking at pushing Morty more towards a Bruiser, but the changes could not get in for this patch. The goal is to have Morty have more of a combo-game, while reducing a bit of his projectile utility.
Previous knockback scaling was increased by 1 for each grenade shot by the same blaster shot with no limit on the multiplier. Knockback scaling is now limited to a max of 3 from no limit.
Morty was revealed to be a playable fighter in MultiVersus.
Trivia
Morty, Harley Quinn, and Rick are, currently, the only Fighters in the game who can swear if the player has toggled the "Mature Language" option on in the Settings menu.
Batman and The Man in Black also say the "badass" and "ass" swears respectively, but the game doesn't count them as being mature language.
In the Open Beta, Morty and Evil Morty, as well as Rick and SEAL Team Rick, were originally voiced by Justin Roiland (via his archived recordings from the first five seasons of Rick and Morty), before being replaced by Harry Belden following a controversy.
