Norville Rogers, better known by his nickname, Shaggy, is a Fighter from the Scooby-Doo Universe in MultiVersus. He was revealed alongside the game itself on November 18th, 2021.

Origin

Norville "Shaggy" Rogers is one of the core, swaggy members of Mystery Inc., the amateurish crime-solving group of friends from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Shaggy, alongside other members of the Mystery Gang, was inspired by the four protagonists from the 1959-1963 sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gills, with his character being influenced by Maynard G. Krebs, though changed to be a more hippie-like character, rather than Maynard's beatnik archetype. Shaggy's overall moveset and personality in MultiVersus is heavily influenced by the famous Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme that began spreading across the internet in 2017. The memes featured Shaggy going "Super Saiyan", a reference to Shueisha's popular manga and anime series Dragon Ball. The meme itself was primarily uses scenes from the 2011 direct-to-DVD animated movie Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur, in which a hypnotized Shaggy manages to beat up an entire biker gang all by himself.

Shaggy is a lanky, somewhat of a hippy, laid back and cowardice teenager with a monstruous hunger and love for Scooby Snacks. He's also well known for using the word "like" during his speeches a lot, being the owner and best friend of the titular Scooby-Doo, the talking Great Dane, and shouting "ZOINKS!" whenever he's scared.

Just a normal sandwich-munching, mystery-solving guy with limitless power of unknown origin.

The last thing Shaggy remembers before The Change was exploring another spooky old mansion with his pal Scoob, just like any other day with the gang. He found a strange glowing crystal and, thinking it was rock candy, went to take a bite. There was a FLASH… and then blackness. When he came to, he found himself in possession of incredible powers. He doesn’t know where they came from or how they work, but he’s vowed to use them to vanquish evil and protect the little guy. As soon as he gets some lunch, that is.[1]

Default Variant

Shaggy's default appearance seens to be based on his "dot-eyed" design he had in the Scooby-Doo shows made in the 70s and early 80s and in most Scooby-Doo movies and shorts created by Warner Bros. Animation from the 2010s onward.

Lore

  • According to Eric Stirpē, the main lead writer for MultiVersus, Shaggy's portrayal in the game comes from one year after the events of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! happened.[2]
  • Shaggy's website bio states the he gained his super-human powers after undergoing a process known as "The Change": while exploring an undetermined spooky old mansion (possibly Scooby's Haunted Mansion) alongside Scooby-Doo he came across a "strange glowing crystal" which he mistook for rock candy and, upon taking a bite from the gem, was blinded by a flash of light and collapsed. When he woke up, he found himself in the possession of his current powers, and has vowed to use them in order to protect Scooby and vanquish evil.
    • It has been theorized that the mysterious crystal that Shaggy ate was actually a Gleamium gem, as they somewhat resemble rock candy.
    • It is currently unknown if Uncle Shagworthy has gained his powers the same way his nephew did.
  • If the events depicted in the "You're with Me!" Cinematic Trailer are to be taken as canon, than Shaggy seems to have been one of the Fighters teleported to Trophy's E.D.G.E. in the "Heroes Convergence" phenomenon, before engaging in a fight against Bugs Bunny and Arya Stark with Batman as his ally thanks to a misunderstanding. They all than jump on Bugs' ACME rocket and accidently interrupt a fight between Garnet, Jake the Dog, Taz, and Harley Quinn, starting a fight cloud between all of them. The end of the trailer shows Shaggy posing heroically with the rest of the Fighters teleported on Trophy's E.D.G.E., implying that the misunderstanding has been cleared up.
    • The trailer implies that he has been caught in the "Heroes Convergence" phenomenon after gaining his powers.

CHARGE to build up Shaggy's rage. After fully charged, Shaggy gains RAGE and applies ENRAGED to allies. He also drops a Scooby Snack that slightly HEALS the fighter who picks it up.
If RAGED, Shaggy will dash to his ally, making them ENRAGED and releasing a blast that knocks away enemies.

Shaggy equips sandwich. Once equipped, input again to throw the sandwich as a PROJECTILE. Can HEAL allies it passes through.

If RAGED and holding a sandwich, the sandwich will become a large HEAVY PROJECTILE that BREAKS ARMOR and deals more DAMAGE. If not holding a sandwich, Shaggy deals a slam attack similar to his Aerial Down Special.

LIKE, C'MERE MAN!
Shaggy launches himself towards the ground gaining ARMOR and hits nearby enemies upon landing. If RAGED, Shaggy will create a shockwave that hits multiple times. If sandwich is equipped, then Shaggy will throw sandwich PROJECTILE instead.

PASSIVE ABILITIES IT'S, LIKE, OFF-THE-CHARTS
Shaggy's RAGED special attacks hit harder, move further, give him ARMOR during the attack and apply maximum STACKS of WEAKENED to hit enemies. RAGE is consumed after a special attack.

Allies who become ENRAGED will apply maximum STACKS of WEAKENED on their next MELEE attack, but ENRAGED will be consumed afterward.

Shaggy starts each match with a sandwich, because he's Shaggy.

Shaggy’s Side Special felt a little too unpunishable, so we’ve added a bit of Whiff Recovery.

    • Addressed an issue where Shaggy could perform two rage specials
  • + Rage Ground Down Special - Shaggy’s shockwave will launch fighters into a final hit that applies Weakened debuff.
  • - Ground/Air Side Special - Added 4 additional frames of whiff recovery

Open Beta V0

  • + Passive: Shaggy now starts with a Sandwich with each life.
  • + Down Air Special: Has armor when starting descent.
  • + Grounded Up Attack: Has earlier on hit cancel frames and knockback pushes the opponent up and forward to help Shaggy follow up and combo.
  • + Grounded Down Attack: has faster startup.
  • - Base Movement Speed: Shaggy movement speed reduced from 2300 to 2225.

  • Shaggy was a playable fighter in the Closed Alpha.

  • Shaggy was revealed to be a playable fighter in MultiVersus.


Trivia

  • Shaggy's silhouette is used for the Random slot on the character select screen and for the Default Announcer Pack's icon.
  • Prior to the Season 1.03 Patch, Shaggy couldn't be unlocked via completing the Beginning Tutorial (as it was Wonder Woman who'd be unlocked instead). However, he could've been bought with 700 Gleamium.
