Finn the Human

Finn Mertens the Human is a Fighter from the Adventure Time Universe in MultiVersus. He was revealed alongside the game itself on November 18th, 2021, and is part of the game's initial release roster, having been playable since the first Tech Test.

Origin

Finn Mertens is one of the main protagonists of the 2010 Cartoon Network animated series Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward. According to Ward, he had created Finn, as well as the rest of Adventure Time, in the perspective of a Dungeons & Dragons session, while taking influence from his childhood, which was primarily spent indoors. Ward would produce a script for an animated short and pitch it to Frederator Studios and Nickelodeon, with said animated short airing on January 11, 2007 on Nickelodeon's sister channel, Nicktoons. Although the short gained almost 3 million views on internet reuploads and won an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject, any attempts at pitching the series to Nickelodeon fell through. Frederator, not deterred by the rejection, went over to Nick's competitor, Cartoon Network, for a final pitch. Cartoon Network accepted the pilot and would only greenlight it if Ward could prove that "the seven-minute short made for Nick wasn't a one-hit wonder". The network also suggested that Finn and Jake live in a treehouse and not be nomads as was the original short, with the showrunners additionally recasting Zack Shada, who had voiced Finn's prototype Pen in the short, for his brother Jeremy, due to his more youthful sounding voice as the former went through puberty. As the show went on and Jeremy went through puberty himself, Ward decided to age Finn to coincide with Shada's age and make the show delve into more mature themes.

Raised by the anthropomorphic dog couple of Joshua and Margaret, Finn is a young teenage boy with an undying thirst for adventure who lives alongside his second adoptive brother Jake and their best buddy BMO in the Tree Fort. He is believed by many to be the last human in the Land of Ooo (which, as Finn would later discover, is not the case).

Official Biography

He’ll slay anything that’s evil. That’s his deal!

Website

(Mostly) the last human from the Land of Ooo, Finn is a young warrior who has spent most of his life doing quests and helping the forces of good in their never-ending battle against anything and everything evil. With his sword, limitless imagination, and best friend/adopted brother Jake the Dog, there’s no villain he can’t defeat. When he’s not slaying evil, he loves just chilling and playing some video games with BMO.[1]

In-Game

Finn's bombastic sword skills will make short work of his opponents. The more hits he lands, the more coins he earns... and those coins can buy some pretty sweet power-ups.

Gameplay

Finn is an Assassin-type character specialized in pressuring opponents with his various sword strikes. His core mechanic lies in his coin system, where opponents that are damaged by Finn drop coins, which can be collected by him or his ally. These coins can be used to purchase special buffs from Choose Goose when Finn uses his Grounded Down Special, which grants effects to both Finn and his ally. These buffs last for limited time; if Finn is rung out while a buff is still active, he'll respawn without it.

Finn's Air Down and Side Specials have an interesting interaction with each other. His Air Down Special spawns a gem, at the cost of coins, and can use his Side Special (either ground or air versions) to dash towards the gem at high speed, functioning similarly to Garnet's Down Special, Gem Dash. This can be used both offensively or defensively, such as recovering from off-stage. Finn won't dash if the gem is too far away.

Unique to Finn, he's currently the only character in the game that can move while charging his ground attacks, giving him a lot of mobility and flexibility. All but his Air Up Attack use his sword, giving him extra hit with disjointed hurtboxes. This, combined with his above average movement speed and mobility, can make Finn a very oppressive fighter.

The bread-and-butter of Finn's lies in his Up Special, Backpack Attack!, which makes him spin his backpack around himself, hitting enemies multiple times. The backpack has a dragging-type hurtbox, meaning it'll effectively connect the hits. Finn can reliably combo his Grounded Up Attack with his Up Special against opponents on lower percentages, and many of Finn's other low knockback moves can also be chained into it.

Finn shops for goods using his COIN. He can buy a STACK of HASTEN to increase his team's move speed, a STACK of BOOTY to give his team a PROJECTILE shield when he CHARGES attacks or BMO. With BMO, Finn will do a BMO chop instead of a high five. BMO utilizes the high five CHARGE meter as well.
ALGEBRAIC STOMP!
Finn stomps on his backpack, sending himself and his enemies upward. The more COINS he has, the more height he gets.

PASSIVE ABILITIES FAT STACKS!
Finn uses COIN to boost his special attacks. When Finn hits enemies, the enemies drop COIN. Finn and his allies can pick up the COIN and increase Finn's COIN count.
Finn can move while CHARGING attacks on the ground, but his attacks only gain power if he moves. His Grounded Neutral Special attack CHARGES whenever he moves, even if he is not attacking.

Finn is living up to his ideal as a speedy, combo-heavy assassin a little too well right now with his ability to carry opponents across the stage resulting in very low damage ring outs. • Movelist Description of this change will not be updated until the next patch

Season 1 Patch

Fighting against Finn felt too difficult as Finn felt a bit too safe and could throw out attacks without much fear of a punish due to how quickly he recovered. Hurt/Hit box foundational updates are coming soon, but will not be in this patch.

  • - Passive - Attacks affected by Attack Decay no longer spawn coins

Finn now spawns with 100 gold instead of 200

  • + Air Down Special - Fixed an issue where the gem required 200 gold to spawn, but only cost 100 to spawn. Gem now requires and costs 100
  • - Air Side Special - Added additional whiff recovery.
  • - Ground/Air Up Special - Reduced the strength of the vacuum effect on the backpack
    • Weaker hits of the backpack will no longer “overwrite” stronger knockbacks from other attacks
    • Whiffing with all hits will still drop a coin
    • Added whiff recovery.
    • Hitboxes should better match the attack (not perfect until our planned hurt/hit box system overhaul)
  • - Air Side Attack - Reduced active frames to diminish Finn’s ability to hit fighters behind him
  • - Ground Down Attack - The distance Finn covers with this attack now scales with how charged the attack is.
  • - Ground Side Attack - Increased whiff recovery for the first hit.
  • + On The House perk - Fixed an issue where Finn still spent gold on gems spawned by the perk
    • Slightly reduced the launch speed of gems spawned by the perk – this should fix issues that arose when this perk was combined with the “Make it Rain, Dog!” perk

Open Beta V0

The goal of these changes are to reduce the easily achievable blazing movement speed Finn has access to.

  • ~ Grounded Down Attack:
    • + Hit 1 and 2 chain together more reliably
    • - Reduced knockback on second hit.
  • + Aerial and Grounded Up Special: Hitboxes now connect into each other more consistently.
  • - Base Movement Speed: Reduced from 2200 to 2100.
  • - Grounded Down Special: Boots of Speed now gives 10% increased movement speed on first purchase, 5% on the second stack and 3% movement on each subsequent stack, reduced from flat 10% on all stacks. It is now capped at 10 stacks reduced from unlimited stacking.
  • - Down Air Attack: Hitbox starts a bit later.
  • - Side Air Attack 2: Increased whiff recovery.
  • - Neutral Air Attack: Increased whiff recovery.
  • ~ Down Air Special: Crystal now counts as a projectile for perk application

Trivia

Finn's original design.
  • Finn's original design was originally going to feature his robot-arm from the episode "Two Swords", as seen in his concept art.
    • The original design model would later appear the trailer for MultiVersus x NHL Face-Off: Avalanche Vs. Golden Knights real-time animated presentation, alongside Finn's Night Sword. Weirdly enough the Night Sword would later also be referenced in the Full Launch, appearing on various Rift backgrounds, and even having its model inside the game since the Tech Tests.
      • This could suggest that Robot-Arm Finn could've been later repurposed as Variant that would've used the Night Sword instead of Finn's normal Scarlet sword in order to differentiate it more from the Default Variant.
  • A large amount of Finn's interaction lines with Garnet reference a supposed crossover. What this is referring to is unclear, as Adventure Time and Steven Universe have never formally crossed over.
    • Fern also mentions this in his interaction lines with Garnet.
  • Prior to the Full Launch, Finn used to have his sword in his backpack during his victory and defeat animations. This has been changed to not involve it in his backpack anymore.
    • When emoting with Default, the sword will still be in Finn's backpack.
    • Also prior to the Full Launch, Finn's Air Down Special used to be Throwin' Stones. This move involved Finn throwing a gem that he could've grabbed and teleport to with Mathematical Air Dash. It was changed to Algebraic Stomp due to Throwin' Stones being too clunky and out of character.
  • Despite being featured on several covers for the MultiVersus: Collision Detected comic series, within the comic's actual storyline Finn only appears as a small cameo in Avia's daughter box game in issue #2 and as evil robots created by a Rick-controlled Brainiac in issue #3.
