McDonald's

McDonald's Corporation is an American multinational fast food chain, founded in 1940 as a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald, in San Bernardino, California, United States. They rechristened their business as a hamburger stand, and later turned the company into a franchise, with the Golden Arches logo being introduced in 1953 at a location in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1955, Ray Kroc, a businessman, joined the company as a franchise agent and proceeded to purchase the chain from the McDonalds. Previously headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, it moved to nearby Chicago in June 2018. McDonald's is also a real estate company through its ownership of around 70% of restaurant buildings and 45% of the underlying land (which it leases to its franchisees).

One of the restaurant's most iconic products is the Happy Meal, a kid's meal that includes food and a toy (or other forms of merchandise, such as books or cups). The packaging and toy are frequently part of a marketing tie-in to an existing franchise.

On December 2023, a collaboration between MultiVersus and the fast food chain was confirmed prematurely by a promo sticker plastered in the McDonald's restaurant from the Meir shopping street in Antwerp, Belgium.^[1] This information spread online once Twitter user @mercWmouthMVS made two posts regarding the ad on December 7th and 8th.^[2]^[3] The promo had the year 2024 written in its copyright text, and it featured new renders for Harley Quinn and Superman. Other promos would later be found in other restaurants from Belgium and other European countries.^[4]^[5]^[6] 10 days later, the collaboration would be fully confirmed via an announcement on the Swiss, French, and Italian versions of the McDonald's website.^[7] The website announcement also revealed more details in regards to the collaboration, alongside new renders for Taz and Tom & Jerry. Later leaks also revealed new renders for other Fighters.^[8]^[9]

The promo was officialy acknowledged and announced by the game's official Twitter account on March 7th, 2024, before the event started in the States, and way after it had already ended in other countries.^[10]

MultiVersus Collaboration

The collaboration consists of MultiVersus-themed Happy Meals being sold at McDonald's restaurants for a limited amount of time. Each Happy Meal contains one of the 4 weekly small boxes featuring Multiversus-themed small tins, double-sided puzzles, sticker sheets, memory cards and character cards (where the stickers can be plastered upon) that feature a minigame on their back revolving around having to find a specific Fighter a certain amount of times in a pool of other Fighters. Later runs of the collaboration in Canada also introduced the Family Happy Pack, a special package that includes masks based on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Jake the Dog, as well as activity sheets. A QR code is also present on the small boxes, redirecting customers to a minigame on the official Happy Meal Digital website.

The website minigame consists of players selecting specific "Strengths" that symbolize each Fighter (e.g.: "Hero" for Superman, "Sneaky" for Harley Quinn) in order to create an "Awesome Duo".

Trivia

New renders were made for every Fighter that was featured in this promotion. These renders would later be reused for The WB Shop merchandise.
- Some of the Fighters' renders have also been censored to have their weapons removed on the Happy Meal Digital website minigame.
  - Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman also have modified renders that cover up their chests.
The event's description on the Belgian McDonald's website mentions 24 iconic characters to be collected, despite the fact that there were only 23 confirmed playable Fighters on the roster at the time the collaboration took place.

- Furthermore, Arya Stark, Gizmo, LeBron James, Marvin the Martian, Morty, Reindog, Rick, and Stripe weren't featured in the promotion, meaning that only 15 Fighters were actually present in the collaboration.
The designs used for the small cardboard boxes and for the aluminium boxes in the U.S. is different from the ones used in the rest of the world, as these boxes feature the names of the Fighters they portray.

The McDonald's x MultiVersus advertisement that accidently featured the Warner Bros. 100 toys.
- Each small box also sports a unique number that ranges from 1 to 24, so that customers may keep track of their collection.
The promotional image from the Maltese McDonald's website promoting the MultiVersus collaboration accidently credits Nintendo, Creatures, and GAME FREAK in its copyright section for one of their previous Pokémon promotions as opposed to Player First Games and Warner Bros. Discovery. The year is also listed as 2022 instead of 2024.
On March 24th, 2024, MultiVersus youtuber IamBreeze found an advert for the collaboration in one of his local McDonald's restaurants that accidently featured the toys used for an earlier Warner Bros. 100 promotion^[19] as opposed to the MultiVersus ones.^[20]
This collaboration has proven to be highly controversial in the MultiVersus community, due to it happening right after it had been reported that the Israeli branch of McDonald's has provided free meals to the Israel Defense Forces amidst the 2023 Israel-Gaza war, as the Israeli blockade restricted supplies to Gaza.^[21] This event in turn led to people boycotting the McDonald's brand (with the hashtag #BoycottMcDonalds gaining worldwide traction on social media).^[22]^[23]
