A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street is an American supernatural slasher media franchise consisting of nine films, a television series, novels, comic books, and various other media. The franchise began with the film A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), written and directed by Wes Craven. The overall plot of the franchise centers around the fictional character Freddy Krueger, the apparition of a former child killer who was burned alive by the vengeful parents of his victims, who returns from the grave to terrorize and kill the teenage residents of the fictional Springwood, Ohio in their dreams.

The franchise is referenced via Jason Voorhees' Jason VS Variant, which comes from the 2003 Freddy vs. Jason crossover movie between Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. His Up Attack, Crunch Time, is also inspired by a scene in the movie.

Captain Planet

Captain Planet is an American animated environmentalist superhero television series franchise created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. The franchise consists of two different cartoon series: Captain Planet and the Planeteers and The New Adventures of Captain Planet. Both programs are a form of edutainment that advocate environmentalism and are known for having a number of famous actors providing voices for the villains. The shows spawned a franchise consisting of eco-friendly toys, comic books, video games, and a public charity to further promote the work of the show.

The elemental rings of fire and earth, that appear in Morty's Up Aerial Attack (Power of Fire!) and Grounded Side Special (Power of Earth!) respectively, are based on the elemental rings from this franchise and originate from Rick and Morty's "A Rickconvenient Mort" episode, which heavily parodied the original Captain Planet show.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is a media franchise centered on a series of fighting video games originally developed by Midway Games in 1992. The series has a reputation for high levels of graphic violence, including, most notably, its fatalities, which are finishing moves that kill defeated opponents instead of knocking them out. Controversies surrounding Mortal Kombat, in part, led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) video game rating system. Early games in the series were noted for their realistic digitized sprites and an extensive use of palette swapping to create new characters. Following Midway's bankruptcy, the Mortal Kombat development team was acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment and reestablished as NetherRealm Studios.

MultiVersus features many possible callbacks and allusions to this franchise:

• Scorpion's iconic catchphrase when using his spear attack, "Get over here!", is uttered by some Fighters, such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Stripe.
• When winning a match, Jake may say "FLAWLESS VICT- [cough cough] Yeah.. I won.", referencing what the announcer of this series says after a match is won in every Mortal Kombat game.
• If the player Toasts someone while having the Default Announcer Pack equipped, the Default Announcer has a chance of saying "Toasty!", a possible reference to the Toasty! easter egg from Mortal Kombat II.

In addition, some of Jason Voorhees' attacks seem to be based on his moveset from his cameo appearance in Mortal Kombat X.

Peter Potamus

Peter Potamus is a purple animated hippopotamus that first appeared in the 1964–1966 animated television series The Peter Potamus Show, produced by Hanna-Barbera and first broadcast on September 16, 1964. The Peter Potamus Show was divided into three segments: Peter Potamus and So-So, Breezly and Sneezly and Yippee, Yappee and Yahooey. The main segment featured Peter Potamus and his diminutive sidekick So-So the monkey. Episodes generally consisted of Peter and So-So exploring the world in his hot air balloon, which was capable of time travel at the spin of a dial. When faced with a precarious situation, Peter uses his Hippo Hurricane Holler to blow away his opponents.

Peter Potamus' iconic hot air balloon appears as a background element on The Court Maps, referencing its cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Shark Week

Shark Week is an annual, week long TV programming block aired on the Discovery Channel, which features shark-based programming. Shark Week originally premiered on July 17, 1988. Featured annually, in July or early August, it was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks. Over time, it grew in popularity and became a hit on the Discovery Channel. Since 2010, it has been the longest-running cable television programming event in history. Broadcast in over 72 countries, Shark Week is promoted heavily via social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

To coincide with the 2024 edition of the block, several Shark Week-themed Variants and related cosmetics were released during Season 1, alongside two Shark Week-themed Events and a Rift.

Shark Week is currently the only franchise represented in the game to be fully-owned by Warner Bros. Discovery that originates from the Discovery side of the corporation.

The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Movie is an American media franchise based on LEGO construction toys. It began with the 2014 film The LEGO Movie, which was directed and written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The success of the film led to the release of two licensed video games, a 4D film theme park attraction, two spin-off films titled The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which were released in 2017, Unikitty!, an animated television series that also came out in the same year, and the sequel to the original film titled The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part in 2019. The plot of the original movie involves around Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary LEGO minifigure who helps a resistance movement stop a tyrannical businessman from gluing everything in the LEGO world into his vision of perfection. While Warner Bros. Discovery still owns the rights to the projects in their franchise, including the Unikitty! animated television series, Universal Pictures bought 5-year rights to make separate films from 2020 to 2025, with plans to include their own IP, including franchises and characters, in them.

The franchise is referenced via the First Try Sticker. In the first installment of the franchise, Batman tries to hit a button multiple times with his Batarangs. After he eventually manages to hit it, he exclaims "First Try!".

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy of epic fantasy adventure films directed by Peter Jackson and produced by New Line Cinema, based on the novel The Lord of the Rings by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. The films are titled identically to the three volumes of the novel: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the films follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins as he and the Company of the Ring embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring to defeat its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron. The Company eventually splits up and Frodo continues the quest with his loyal companion Sam and, eventually, the treacherous Gollum. Meanwhile, Aragorn, heir in exile to the throne of Gondor, along with the elf Legolas, the dwarf Gimli, Merry, Pippin, Boromir, and the wizard Gandalf, unite to save the Free Peoples of Middle-earth from the forces of Sauron and rally them in the War of the Ring to aid Frodo by distracting Sauron's attention. The series would later give rise to the greater Middle-earth film franchise which would also include The Hobbit prequel trilogy.

As revealed by the PFGDemoReel video posted on May 6th, 2022, the palantír depicting the Eye of Sauron was meant to cameo on the Trophy's E.D.G.E. maps, but never made it into the game.

Initially, according to leaks and datamines, way more The Lord of the Rings was meant to be added to the game prior to its online shutdown. For more information regarding the matter, see Scrapped Content.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 musical film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Loosely based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the first book in Baum's Oz series, the movie tells the story of Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas, who finds herself in the magical Land of Oz alongside her dog, Toto, after their house had been sucked into a cyclone. She goes on a journey to find the titular Wizard of Oz, who is said to be the only one able send her and Toto back home. On her journey, she meets several odd characters that range from fantastical creatures who also want to meet the Wizard to the evil Wicked Witch of the West. While the Oz series as a whole is in the public domain, the MGM adaptation and all elements that are directly based on it are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Wicked Witch of the West, the main antagonist of the movie and original book, appears as a major character in the MultiVersus: Collision Detected comic book series. Additionally, the achievement "And Your Little Dog, Too!" is a reference to her most iconic quote from the film, addressed to protagonist Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto: "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!".

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is an American sketch comedy television series created by Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim for Cartoon Network's nighttime programming block Adult Swim. It premiered on February 11, 2007 and originally ran until May 2, 2010. The show features surreal, dark and often satirical humor (at points anti-humor and cringe comedy), public-access television-style musical acts, bizarre faux-commercials with a unique editing and special effects style by Doug Lussenhop to make the show appear off-kilter.

The texture used for Agent Smith's file that appears in his Victory Animation features the script for the fourth episode of the show's fourth season, "Universe", which became a viral internet meme upon its initial airing.
