About

Arena

Arena is a "2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2" mode introduced in Season 4. Each round round is a 2v2 match that lasts until the 90 seconds timer runs out. The winner is determined by the team with the most ringouts and/or damage dealt. Arena Coin.png Arena Coins are earned after every round, with the amount earned being dependent on the team's "Interest" (which is gained based on the determinant value of their Upgrade items' rarities), and are mainly used to buy Upgrades from the in-mode shop that appears in-between rounds. Each player starts with Arena Coin.png 10. Before entering Arena, the players must select their respective Fighter from a roster of 8 randomly-selected characters (players may also reroll the selection for Arena Coin.png 3 or select randomly for Arena Coin.png +2). The best performing teams of an Arena match may end up having to play up to 13 rounds before winning, while the worst performing teams may be kicked out after roughly 3 rounds and 4 losses. Occasionally, the mode will pit players against a CPU-controlled "DarkMimic" team, a ditto team which has the same Fighters, Cosmetics, and Upgrades.

Upgrade Items

Upgrades bought with Arena Coin.png from the in-mode shop enhance Fighters with special perks and/or abilities. They can also be leveled up akin to Gems if the same Power-Up is purchased multiple times. Only 4 Upgrades are displayed at a time in the shop, but players can reroll the selection at the cost of some Arena Coin.png. They vary in rarity and value: Common, UNCOMMON, RARE, EPIC and LEGENDARY.

Training

Training, known as The Lab in the Open Beta, is a mode where players can train, practice combos and test out Fighters and Perks for free.

When entering a match in this mode players will be pitted against only one opponent, but 2 more Fighters, whose behavior and teams are customizable, can be spawned. The default Map for this mode is Training Room, but it can be changed to all the other available Maps from the game in the menu. A "Total Damage" and toggleable "Hit Stun Combo" counters can also be seen in this mode.

Local

Local, known as Local Play in the Open Beta, is a mode that allows 2-4 players to play matches on a single screen. Players can choose one of the following modes: 2v2, 1v1, and Free For All. They can also select the Maps and time & Ringout limit, as well as activating and deactivating Map Hazards. Every released Fighter in the game is available for free in this mode. Bots can also be enabled, and other game modes and select Mutators can also be selected.

Custom Game

Custom Game, known as Create Online Lobby in the Open Beta and as Custom Online Lobbies in the Closed Alpha, is a game mode that allows players to create their own online lobbies. The host can choose one of the following game modes for a match: 2v2, 1v1, and Free For All. They can also set the Maps and the time & Ringout limit, as well as activating and deactivating Map Hazards. Up to 3 other players (or bots) can be invited in this mode. Minigames from Wacky Weekend rulesets can also be played in this mode. Global Mutators can also be selected.

Spectator Mode

During Season 2 (Open Beta), a spectator sub-mode was added to this mode which allows up to 4 players to take the role of a spectator and watch the other players/bots battle online.

Season 4 1.4.3 Patch
Arena
There were no official patch notes for the changes to make Arena faster overall. These have already been in the game for a bit, but posting notes again just for visibility or if anyone didn’t play in the last week of Arena.

  • You lose health faster now, it is possible to be out in as little as 3 rounds, but generally about 4 losses
  • More money is put into the economy early and more often due to less rounds being played
  • Interest increased to require less gold (1 per 6 to start), and give more at max (10)
  • Items have had their xp necessary reduced, 1 for level 2, 3 for level 3
  • Item drop rates have changed so that they appear earlier
  • Streaks have been tuned to give bonuses earlier
  • We reduced character choice to one of each class. This was mainly done to avoid teams with duplicates. We didn’t think that teams with the same character were super interesting, and generally Tanks were the only ones that could dupe, so we shouldn’t see two Jasons or two Wonder Woman teams anymore.
  • Prestige gains lowered to account for shorter Arena times

Changes

  • Added item rarity percentages to the store so players know the chances that each item rarity will show up in each round
  • Reduced lag seen in the shopping phase for buying/selling/rerolling, most cases should be completely gone
  • Increased number of character choices from 4 to 6.
